Other default settings
Alongside policies, the Smoothwall Appliance includes settings and features that are on, off, or configured in different ways. These articles detail some of these default settings.
System access
- You can sign into the Smoothwall On-Premise Appliance Admin UI with the username admin and the Admin UI password.
- You can change the username, add new administrators, or reset the password.
- Remote secure access via SSH is off by default.
- You can edit the message the sign-in page shows when it is on.
Modules and updates
- Default modules and additional modules to install.
- By default, your Smoothwall Appliance doesn’t automatically move to newer versions. You can manually update or automatically schedule updates.
- The Smoothwall Appliance automatically sets the time using a continuously running time server.
- The Smoothwall Appliance automatically updates Themes, Categories and Signatures every night using the Blocklist subscription.
Authentication
Once you set up Directories, User Groups, and Web Proxy Authentication Policies, you can adjust your authentication settings.

Note: We recommend you edit the default Proxy logging settings.
- A default image and message show on the non-SSL or SSL Login Page.

Backups and data sharing

- Settings Archives:
- A default Archive Profile with everything selected, to be used to create Settings Archives.
Note: If you use Azure sign-in, you must edit your Archive Profile to include the Azure authentication settings.
Network management
- Default network settings.
- The hostname is the Smoothwall Appliance’s IP address.
- User-defined DNS servers default to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.
- Two default Interfaces: Ethernet Port 1 - MGMT and External with DHCP enabled.
Web Filter

Web Filter Exceptions automatically exclude these destinations from filtering:
192.168.0.0/16, 172.16.0.0/12 and 10.0.0.0/8 - Messages on the Block page appear when websites or content are blocked.
- A default HTTPS inspection warning.
- Scanning messages when Anti-malware is on.
Reports, logs and alerts
- Default log retention settings.
- The ‘secret knock’ set to 600 seconds.
- Once you turn on System Alerts, you can configure the various settings and thresholds.
