Smoothwall access rules control internal and external traffic for many services running on the Smoothwall Appliance when it's acting as a Firewall. When your organisation starts using Smoothwall Filter, you’ll have these default Smoothwall access rules:
- Allow access from the initially configured port: Ensures Smoothwall services work and gives you access to the Admin UI to edit your Smoothwall configuration.
-
Allow ICMP: Allows your Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) system (if used) to send error messages and ping requests.
Note
You must go to Network > Settings > Advanced and ensure the ICMP checkboxes are selected.
-
Default rule: Ensures that any traffic coming from internal interfaces not explicitly allowed in a rule above this one is rejected.
Note
To manage external traffic, use the Bad external traffic dropdown on the Network > Settings > Advanced page.
For security purposes, you must edit your Smoothwall access rules to accept traffic only for the Smoothwall services you use, and limit access to the Source IPs that need it.
