Smoothwall attempts to create a Settings Archive of your On-Premise Appliance configuration for use in the event of a failure. When successful, each new Settings Archive is automatically created on Sunday night and stored for two weeks, keeping two previous backups. To comply with GDPR, we store backups at rsync.net in Switzerland.
Important
This isn’t a guaranteed service. Settings Archives may not be created if network issues occur or an upstream firewall blocks the connection. You must also manage your backups manually or on a schedule.
Can we switch off the automatic Settings Archives?
- Go to System > Preferences > Registration options.
- Clear the Enable cloud settings backup checkbox.
- Select Save.
Do I need to make any changes to upstream firewalls?
Check if you have an upstream firewall, such as a smart firewall outside Smoothwall. If you do, ensure that Port 22 is open for outbound traffic on the upstream firewall, as data is transmitted using Secure Copy Protocol (SCP).
Go to Reports > Logs > System. If the upstream firewall isn't configured correctly, you will see a message saying that the Settings Archive failed. After you configure the firewall, return to the page the following week to check that the Settings Archives are generating as expected.
Restore an automatic Settings Archive
If you don’t have any Settings Archives, contact the Smoothwall Support Team. If Settings Archives exist saved in the Cloud, we will make them available on the Archives page for you to restore.
