This article applies to our On-Premise Appliance Filter and Firewall product only, not to Cloud.
You can use your Smoothwall appliance’s System Alerts to alert you to system events. For example, you may want to notify a system administrator when an update is available, a critical system service stops, or network traffic reaches a particular threshold.
For details on how each alert can be used, see: System Alert configuration and thresholds
By default, alerts are not shown on your Dashboard or sent via email or SMS. The instructions below detail how to switch all alerts on.
Alerts on the Dashboard
To have alerts shown on your Dashboard:
- Go to Reports > Alerts > Alert Settings.
- Select the Enabled checkbox. Non-configurable alerts are now on and show on the Dashboard (once you save your changes).
- Further configuration is required for System Service Monitoring and configurable alerts. Find the section for the alert.
- Configure the alert settings:
- For System Service Monitoring alerts, select which actions to send an alert for.
- For configurable alerts, see how to configure the settings.
- Select Save.
Email or SMS alerts
Before you begin
- Set up a Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) server or relay for Smoothwall to send emails or SMS.
- Identify the users Smoothwall should send emails or SMS to and add them to a Distribution Group.
Set up alerts via email or SMS
- Go to Reports > Alerts > Alerts.
- In the Groups section, select the Distribution Group to receive System Alerts from the drop-down list.
- Select the Select button.
- Decide whether to group your alerts:
- Select the Enable instantaneous alerts checkbox to receive one email or SMS for each alert as soon as it is generated.
- If this is deselected, your email or SMS will include details for all alerts triggered simultaneously. The email or SMS will be held back for two minutes to collect any additional alerts.
- Move to the section for the alert to be sent via email or SMS.
- Select the checkbox next to the letter (email) icon, phone (SMS) icon, or both.
- Select Save.
