Follow this article in the event of an RMA or hardware upgrade if your Smoothwall Appliance is an Apligo model with front-mounted removable Hard Disk Drives (HDDs).
Important
- Don’t install drives other than those provided by Smoothwall, as this voids the hardware warranty.
- You will lose logs stored on your On-Premise Appliance.
- If you have a Hybrid setup, you can use Cloud Reports to see the most recent logs.
- If you have an Appliance-only setup and require these logs, you can request them from Smoothwall Support in a non-readable format.
Before you begin
Ensure you have the following:
- The replacement drive(s) provided by Smoothwall.
- The HDD Bay key provided with the Smoothwall Appliance.
- A Philips-head screwdriver set.
- An HDMI Monitor with power and HDMI leads.
- The On-Premise Appliance Software Serial Number.
- Access to the LAN via Ethernet cable.
- If required, a manual backup or a Migration Package supplied by Smoothwall Support.
Step 1: Replace the hardware
- Power off the Appliance and disconnect it from the power lead.
- Use the HDD Bay key to unlock and open the HDD enclosure doors.
- Remove the HDD caddies.
- Remove the retaining screws holding the HDD(s) in the caddies. Make a note of the drive’s orientation.
- Remove the replacement drive(s) from their packaging and set them in the caddies with the same orientation.
- Replace the retaining screws.
- Insert the caddies back into the Appliance.
- Close the HDD enclosure doors and lock using the HDD Bay key.
- Attach the HDMI monitor, USB Keyboard and USB Installer/CD Drive to the Smoothwall Appliance.
- Reconnect the power lead and power on the Appliance.
Step 2: Install the Smoothwall software

Follow this article to download the Smoothwall installation software and reinstall using the BIOS autoclean option.
Tip
If the appliance doesn’t boot to the USB installation media, power-cycle the machine, access the BIOS in the first moments of boot and amend the boot order to put USB devices before HDDs.
- Connect the Smoothwall Appliance to the LAN.
- From a LAN machine, access the Smoothwall Appliance on port 81 on the IP address you entered.
- Sign in with the username and password set at reinstall or reset the password.
- Proceed through the registration process, supplying the Software Serial Number and any required information highlighted in red.
- Select default Web Filter policies.
- Add DNS Forwarders for the Smoothwall Appliance to make DNS queries and receive updates.
- Install any available modules.
- Update to the latest Release.
- If you have a backup you didn’t install as part of the ISO reinstall or a Cloud backup, you can install it using the Admin UI.
