This article applies to our On-Premise Appliance Filter and Firewall product only, not to Cloud.
Where possible, you should manage your backups manually or on a schedule.
Smoothwall also automatically takes backups of the configuration of your On-Premise Appliance settings for use in the event of a failure.
We back up your settings to the Cloud once a week on a Sunday night. Each backup is stored for two weeks, with two previous backups kept at all times. To comply with GDPR, we store backups at Rsync.net in Switzerland.
Can we switch off the backups?
To switch off automatic backups:
- Go to System > Preferences > Registration options.
- Uncheck the Enable cloud settings backup checkbox.
- Select Save.
Do I need to make any changes to upstream firewalls?
Check if you have an upstream firewall such as a smart firewall outside of Smoothwall. If you do, you’ll need to ensure you have Port 22 outbound open on your upstream firewall, as data is transmitted using Secure Copy Protocol (SCP).
Go to Reports > Logs > System. If your upstream firewall isn't configured correctly, you will see a message saying that the backup failed. Configure your firewall, and return to the page next week to check the backups are being generated as expected.
Restore from the Cloud backup
If you do not have any of your backups, contact the Smoothwall Support Team. We will make Cloud backups available to you.
All backups for your hostname and serial combination will then be available on the regular backups page for you to reinstall: Restore On-Premise Appliance backups
