This article applies to organisations with a 'Hybrid' setup (both On-Premise Appliance and Cloud), as well as On-Premise only and Cloud only setups.
Your Smoothwall setup includes default Web Filter Policies that block certain content.
- The Custom allowed content and Custom blocked content policies are blank for you to customise as needed.
- Core Blocked Content is a Category Group that contains Categories and Signatures. We don’t include specific details, as it varies depending on the default Web Filter Policies.
Hybrid (both Cloud Portal and On-Premise Appliance)
The platform that is set up first determines your default Web Filter Policies.
- Cloud Portal set up first: The Delivery team applies the Default Cloud Portal Web Filter Policies across both Cloud Filter and On-Premise Appliance. Your organisation can’t set up Cloud Portal independently.
-
On-Premise Appliance set up first:
- By the Delivery team: The Delivery Team applies the Default On-Premise Appliance Web Filter Policies to both platforms.
- By your organisation: Smoothwall syncs the policy set you choose in On-Premise Appliance to Cloud Filter.
After installation, both platforms sync. You can then adjust policies and categories as needed on either platform.
Default Cloud Portal Web Filter Policies
For organisations using only Cloud Filter, the Delivery team applies the Default Cloud Portal Web Filter Policies before releasing access to the Cloud Portal. You can then adjust your Web Filter Policies and Categories as needed.

On-Premise Appliance
The default Web Filter Policies depend on who sets up your On-Premise Appliance.
- The Delivery team: The Delivery Team applies the Default On-Premise Appliance Web Filter Policies to both platforms.
- Your organisation: Smoothwall syncs the policy set you choose in On-Premise Appliance to Cloud Filter.
From there, you can adjust your Web Filter Policies and Categories as needed.
Default On-Premise Appliance Web Filter Policies
The Default On-Premise Appliance Web Filter Policies applied by the Delivery Team include separate policies for IT Staff, other Staff and Students. This lets you customise access for different user types.
- We don’t include details of these, as we continue to improve this list over time.
- The Banned Users policy is blank, allowing you to temporarily block web browsing.
- Unauthenticated IPs and Default Users are blocked from accessing the same content as students.
