The main components of the Smoothwall Filter and Firewall on the On-Premise Appliance are separated into individual modules.
Your licence determines which modules you can access. Contact your Customer Success Manager to discuss your package and available features.
Install a module
- Go to System > Maintenance > Modules.
- In the Available modules section, hover over the module and select Install.
- You’ll see a ‘Software change in progress’ window.
- Once installed, you’ll see a banner that says: ‘Warning: The configuration on this server has changed and the server should be rebooted at the first opportunity.’ Reboot your On-Premise Appliance.
Remove a module
You can remove a module to simplify the menu items your staff has to administer and maintain. You can always reinstall a module, as long as your licence includes it and the Release you use supports it.
- Go to System > Maintenance > Modules.
- In the Installed modules section, hover over the module and select Uninstall.
- In the Uninstall module window, select Uninstall.
- You’ll see a ‘Software change in progress’ window.
- Once installed, you’ll see a banner that says: ‘Warning: The configuration on this server has changed and the server should be rebooted at the first opportunity.’ Reboot your On-Premise Appliance.
What Modules do I have, and what do I need to install?
When you first start using Smoothwall, some modules will already be installed, while you may need to install others. Your modules may be different if you have previously made changes to this area.
Default modules
All setups have these modules installed:
- SNMP: The Simple Network Management Protocol functionality under Services > SNMP.
- Routing: The functionality under Network > Routing > RIP.
- Monitor: Alert pages under Reports > Alerts, as well as the Reports > Settings > Groups and Output settings pages.
Guardian3
Guardian3 is the filtering side of Smoothwall. If you have purchased Smoothwall as a Firewall only, you may not have this module. This module contains all pages under the Guardian and Web Proxy top-menu items.
Note
If you don’t have the Guardian3 module installed, you’ll see a separate module for Proxy. Select Install under Guardian3 to install both Guardian3 and Proxy. If you select Install under Proxy, you’ll see an error message in a banner: ‘Error: The module change attempted at <date/time> failed.’
Additional modules
Depending on your licence and setup, these modules may be installed, or you may need to install them manually:

You may see additional items if you’re on a Release previous to Maiden.

-
