When viewing Smoothwall On-Premise Appliance Web Filter logs, you’ll see a Code column. In this article, we’ve detailed some of the most common HTTP response codes you’ll see, and any actions you should take as a result.
200 OK
The standard response for successful HTTP requests. The website or service was accessed successfully. If it should have been blocked, edit or add new Web Filter Policies.
403 Forbidden
The request was valid, but the server is refusing to respond to it. On servers where authentication is required, this usually means the credentials were successfully authenticated, but don’t grant access to the resource. This needs to be fixed external to the Smoothwall Appliance.
404 Not Found
The requested resource could not be found, but may be available again in the future. This may indicate issues with DNS resolution, so ensure the URL requested was spelt correctly and does not have invalid characters.
407 Proxy Authentication Required
The application or site does not support the authentication method used. Add an Authentication Exception for the domain, or change your authentication method.
409 Conflict
This often results from a conflict between the Upstream proxy's request resolution and the local DNS. Verify that the DNS you use resolves the requested domain to the correct IP address.
500 Internal Server Error
A generic error message when no more specific information is available.
- If your Block page also shows a 500 error, contact Smoothwall Support.
- If the website itself returns a 500 error, this needs to be fixed external to the Smoothwall Appliance.
502 Bad Gateway
The server was acting as a gateway or proxy and received an invalid response from the upstream server. Check your routing and upstream proxy settings external to the Smoothwall Appliance.
503 Service Unavailable
The server is currently unavailable, for example, because it is overloaded or down for maintenance. This needs to be fixed external to the Smoothwall Appliance.
504 Gateway Timeout
The server was acting as a gateway or proxy and did not receive a timely response from the upstream server. Check your routing and upstream proxy settings external to the Smoothwall Appliance.
