On Tue 22nd October 2024, we received reports that some users of Smoothwall Cloud Filter on the Microsoft Edge browser are having problems with filtering:
- Only filtering core categories such as Pornography and Gambling.
- Not applying any user or group-specific filtering rules.
- Not applying any custom allow or block rules.
- The Diagnostics and Real Time Filtering Log Viewer pages are not available using the Cloud Filter browser extension.
- The Cloud Filter Bypass is not applied, so filtering is applied from both Cloud Filter and On-Premise Appliance.
This issue was introduced by Microsoft in version 130.0.2849.46 of the Edge browser. Microsoft acknowledged this as a high-impact issue, as described in their Known Issues and bug report.
Update Microsoft Edge to v130.0.2849.56
Microsoft has confirmed that updating Microsoft Edge to v130.0.2849.56 will fix this issue.
If you rolled back to a version prior to 130, such as 129.0.2792.89, revert these changes. Remove any settings you added that restrict Edge from updating so you can move to the updated version of Edge.
Check On-Premise Appliance is filtering users
If you have a Hybrid setup, usually the Cloud Filter extension signals to the On-Premise appliance that it does not need to be 'double filtered' because filtering is done by Cloud Web Filter policies.
If users are experiencing double filtering, they may appear unauthenticated, causing only core filtering policies that apply to 'Everyone' and 'Default Users' to apply. Adjust your Web Filter policies if needed for these users.
