This article applies to our On-Premise Appliance Filter and Firewall product only, not to Cloud.
Block page policies control when users see different Block pages when they try to access blocked websites.
Create a new policy
Go to Guardian > Block page > Policy wizard, or go to Guardian > Block page > Manage Policies and select Create a new policy.
Complete each section from top to bottom. Add or Remove items to adjust your policy. Select Next or the down arrow to expand each step.
Info
Skipping a step creates a policy folder instead of a policy.
- In the Who section, select who the policy applies to. Select either:
- Everyone to apply to all users
- One or more User Groups
- The single user icon and enter a username (not available in Cloud Filter)
- In the What section, select the type of content to be actioned by the policy. Select either:
Important: To prevent issues with the policy not applying or (if applied to Everything), having unintended effects, you must make sure your policies are targeted to the right thing. Check what to target using the Categories and Content Modifications lists.
- In the Where section, select where the policy should apply. Select either:
- Everywhere
- One or more network locations (IP or range of IPs)
- In the When section, select when the policy should apply from your list of Time slots.
- Use the Action selector to choose how the policy should work:
- Drop connection: Users can't access the website and won't see a Block page. This option is often used with applications that can't return a block page to prevent repeated pinging and minimise load on Smoothwall.
- Select a Block page to apply.
Ensure Enable policy is selected, then select Confirm.
On the next page, select Save.
Go to Guardian > Web Filter > Manage Policies to see your new policy at the bottom of the table.
Reorder Block page policies
Policies are applied from top to bottom until a match is found. To change the order:
- Go to Guardian > Block page > Manage Policies.
- To reorder, there are two options:
- Select and drag the row to the required position.
- Select the row and select either the Up or Down button.
- Select Save.
Edit or delete Block page policies
Switch policies or folders on and off
- Go to Guardian > Block page > Manage Policies.
- Select the toggle in the Enabled column.
- Select Save.
Important
Policies within folders that are not enabled have no effect, even if the policy itself is enabled.
Edit a policy or folder
- Go to Guardian > Block page > Manage Policies.
- Select the pencil icon to edit the policy or folder.
- Edit the Who, What, Where, When and Action fields.
- Select Confirm at the bottom to save the changes.
When you edit Policy folder fields (Who, What, Where, When), the changes affect all Policies within the folder. You can only edit items you defined during folder creation after adding policies.
Delete a policy or folder
- Go to Guardian > Block page > Manage Policies.
- Select the icon with an X symbol to delete the policy or folder.
