This article applies to organisations with a Cloud setup, and those with a 'Hybrid' setup (both On-Premise Appliance and Cloud).
You must follow the instructions below to filter devices when they're offsite (using an IP address other than your organisation’s). This applies whether you apply filtering using On-Premise Appliance, Cloud Filter Extension, Smoothwall Browser, or Android Filter App.
- Until you complete the setup, the Diagnostics page shows Outside Premises: Not configured.
- Once you’ve set it up, this field will show False when devices are onsite and True when they are offsite.
Before you begin
Review your existing Web Filter Policies and decide how you want to manage the additional offsite policies:
- Use the Outside Premises option to apply specific policies when users are offsite. For example, block Video Streaming while onsite, but allow YouTube when students are at home.
- Use regular locations to apply specific policies when users are onsite. For example, allow Video Streaming under teacher supervision while onsite but block it at home.
Set up Outside Premises Web Filter Policies
- Create a Location Object:
- Name it Outside Premises.
- Exclude your organisation’s public IP address.
-
Create or edit Web Filter Policies:
- Set the Where field to Everywhere to apply to students while onsite.
- Set the Where field to the Outside Premises Location to apply to students while offsite.
- Move the Outside Premises policies above the Everywhere policies.
Set up Onsite Location Web Filter Policies
- Create a Location Object:
- Name it something descriptive, such as ‘Onsite Location’.
- Add your organisation’s private IP address or range (available on the Diagnostics page).
-
Create or edit Web Filter Policies:
- Set the Where field to the Location you set up to apply to students while onsite.
- Set the Where field to Everywhere to apply to students while offsite.
- Move the Location-based policies above the Everywhere policies.
