You can install the IDex Agent for Smoothwall Cloud Filter and/or Monitor to access the users and Directory groups in your Windows Active Directory.
Important
This article is for customers with a Cloud-only setup. If you have a Smoothwall Appliance, either alone or in a Hybrid setup, see Set up IDex for Smoothwall On-Premise Appliance.
Before you begin
You’ll need the following:
- UNCL.
- API directory key.
- If you have a multi-tenant setup, the Tenant IDs.
Install the IDex Agent

On the Windows server hosting your Active Directory Domain Services (your Domain Controller), go to software.smoothwall.com. Under IDex Agent V2, select Windows x64 to download the IDex Agent.
Note
You must only install the IDex Agent on one Domain Controller in a Cloud-only setup.
- Run the installer and complete the wizard:
- Leave the Web filter host field blank, then select Next.
- Enter your UNCL and API directory key.
- For Tenants:
- If you don’t have a multi-tenant setup, leave this field blank.
- If you have a multi-tenant setup, enter comma-separated Tenant IDs.
- Finish the installation. You don't need to restart the server.
The IDex Agent then sets up the directory in Admin Panel > Directories, which is automatically synced every night.
Sync a directory
If you change users in your Active Directory, manually sync with your Cloud Portal to update it. Depending on your directory size, syncing can take up to 10 minutes.
To sync:
- Run 'sendaddatanow.exe' on your Active Directory server, at C:\ProgramFiles\Smoothwall\IDexAgent\SendAdDataNow.exe
- In Cloud Portal:
- Go to Admin Panel > Directories.
- Select the directory.
- Select Sync Directory.
Edit or delete a directory
To discuss editing or removing an IDex directory in Cloud Portal, select Submit a request from the top of the Help Centre to contact the Support Team.
Map users
Map your Directory groups to User Groups. Once mapped, you can use these User Groups for:
- Web Filter Policies
- Monitor Alerting Profiles
