You can add IP addresses to the interfaces set up on your Smoothwall Appliance.
Tip
If you need to update IP addresses, see Change IP addresses for an Interface.
- Go to Network > Configuration > Interfaces.
- Find the interface and select IP addresses. You’ll see an Attached addresses table.
- Select Add new IP address.
- In the pop-up, select the Type.
Add a static IP address
Use a static IP address for critical devices that need a consistent address.
- Enter the IP address for the interface.
- Enter the Subnet mask for the IP address.
Note
Smoothwall does not support using /31 subnets.
- Configure Gateway. You can select either User defined or None.
- None: Traffic will not route through a gateway. Skip to step 4.
-
User defined: Traffic from this IP address will route through a gateway IP address.
- In the field below the Gateway field, do one of two things:
- Enter the IP address of the gateway.
- Select an Address object.
- Configure the Bandwidth field:
- If you added multiple gateways, enter the approximate bandwidth in Kbps or Mbps used to load balance traffic among connections.
- If you added a single gateway, load balancing is not used, so any value set in this field is ignored.
- Select the Enabled checkbox to turn on Connection monitoring.
- In the field below the Gateway field, do one of two things:
- (Optional) Enter a descriptive Comment.
- Select Add.
Add a DHCP IP address
For networks with many devices that frequently connect and disconnect, use a DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) IP address to assign the IP addresses via DHCP.
- In the Bandwidth field:
- If your DHCP server has multiple gateways configured, enter the approximate bandwidth in Kbps or Mbps used to load-balance traffic among connections.
- If you have a single gateway, load balancing is not used, so any value set in this field is ignored.
- Select the Enabled checkbox to turn on Connection monitoring.
- Enter the DHCP client hostname of your DHCP server.
- (Optional) Enter a descriptive Comment.
- Select Add.
