This article applies to organisations with a 'Hybrid' setup (both On-Premise Appliance and Cloud), as well as On-Premise only and Cloud only setups.
The Smoothwall Web Filter (using either On-Premise Appliance or Cloud Filter):
- Scans all textual content, page structure and metadata regardless of language.
- Uses dynamic content analysis to categorise search terms and page content.
- Compares the content to our default blocklists and your organisation’s Web Filter Policies to decide whether the content is blocked or allowed for the end user.
List of languages
Our most comprehensive offering is our UK English blocklist.
In most cases, Smoothwall can still effectively filter websites in languages other than English.
- Most websites in languages other than English still contain many English words and phrases.
- Smoothwall also examines the page structure, which includes the layout, third-party files, ads, external links and URLs. The page structure is always in English.
We also have default blocklist items in the languages below. These can include words in the original script, such as Cyrillic, and words written using English characters.

If you believe something should be blocked, let us know through our Blocklist Feedback Form. Tell us about all versions and translations of the word or phrase so we can add them all to the blocklists - Smoothwall Filter can’t translate or convert between language scripts.
