Finding Your Smoothwall Filter and Firewall Hardware Appliance Serial Number

When a Smoothwall appliance is mounted in a rack, it can be difficult for you to see the tag with the hardware serial number. The hardware serial number and the software serial number are not the same thing. You can find the software serial number in the Smoothwall Filter and Firewall user interface on the Dashboard page, see our knowledge base article, Finding Your Smoothwall Filter and Firewall Serial Number and Hardware ID.

You can retrieve the hardware serial number by using the command line.

Procedure

1. Log into an SSH or a console session on the Smoothwall Filter and Firewall as the "root" user.
2. Type this command: dmidecode -s system-serial-number.

That will produce a string which is the hardware serial number of the appliance.
