Installing the IDex Client on Your Windows-based Managed Devices

Prerequisites

Before you install the IDex client on your devices, make sure you have turned on the client interface in the Smoothwall Filter and Firewall and configured the directory.

  1. Add an IDex directory.
  2. Add an interface for the IDex client: Adding interfaces for IDex Client.

Procedure

  • Go to the product downloads page: https://customer.smoothwall.net/download and under the IDex Client section. Click the platform and version that you require and save it to a shared network location.

To install the client on a single Windows-based device:

  1. Run the installer and click through the wizard to complete the installation.
  2. When prompted, enter:
    • Web filter host - The host name or IP address of the Smoothwall explicitly configured for communicating with the IDex Client as used when you added the IDex Client interface connection in the Smoothwall Administration Interface.
    • Web filter port - The port number explicitly configured for the IDex Client interface as used when you added the IDex Client interface connection in the Smoothwall Administration Interface.
  3. Complete the installation. You don't need to reboot the machine.

To deploy the client to multiple Windows-based devices:

  1. Create a GPO policy that:
    • Deploys the file that you downloaded.
    • Configures the following registry settings:
      • Key Name: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\IDexClient\Parameters
        • SmoothwallIPAddr - The host name or IP address of the Smoothwall explicitly configured for communicating with the IDex Client as used when you added the IDex Client interface connection in the Smoothwall Administration Interface.
        • SmoothwallPort - The port number explicitly configured for the IDex Client interface as used when you added the IDex Client interface connection in the Smoothwall Administration Interface. 

Follow-Up Tasks

  • To redirect web traffic from the browser to the IDex client, make sure that the proxy settings of your network devices are set to: localhost:8080
