Virtual installation of Smoothwall
When installing a Smoothwall system on a virtual host, it's often done for proof of concept purposes initially. For a minimal test installation the required hard disk size is 40 GB and minimum memory allocation is 4 GB.
There is no minimum requirement for number of processors.
When installing a virtual or physical system for production use, the hard disk size should be calculated depending on the amount of logging data the system is required to store. This value can vary greatly depending on usage patterns but a rule of thumb is 2 MB per day per user. If 6 months of logging data needs to be stored for an installation with 500 clients, this would be:
2 MB x 30 days x 6 months x 500 users = 180 GB
For production systems in a virtual environment Smoothwall recommends 2 CPUs and 4 GB Memory per 500 users.
