To install the Smoothwall Filter and Firewall on a virtual or physical system for production use, you need to calculate the size of hard disk drive that you will need. This is because it depends on the amount of data logging that the system will need to store. This can vary greatly depending on your users usage patterns. However, a general rule of thumb is, 2-MB per a day per each user.
For example, if you need to store more than six months of data logging for an installation with 500 users or devices, this would be: 2-MB x 30-days x 6-months x 500-users = 180-GB.
For production systems in a virtual environment, we recommend two CPUs and 4-GB memory per 500 users.
You might also need a testing system. When installing on a virtual host, for a minimal test installation, the required hard disk size is 40-GB and the minimum memory allocation is 4-GB. There is no minimum requirement for the number of processors.
