This article talks about how to resolve a Smoothwall appliance that won't start up (no HD activity) and is showing a "Network appliance" message on the LCD display panel.
The likelihood of the hardware not being functional is small. The most likely cause is that the system is awaiting a file system check.
The Smoothwall will go through a file system check every 30 reboots or after 120 days, whichever comes first. The file system check will just occur automatically and will normally complete with no issues other than a longer than normal boot time.
If there are errors on the file system it may be necessary to manually confirm any corrections made by the file system check. This will cause the system to appear to not do anything while it is waiting for user feedback.
If a Smoothwall appliance seems unresponsive after a significantly longer than normal boot time, connect the supplied serial cable with a null-modem cable (Serial settings are 9600,8,N,1
) to a suitable communication program (terminal emulator) so the command line can be accessed:
- If the system is just asking for the
root
password, enter it. - Type the following:
fsck -y /dev/sda1
fsck -y /dev/sda3
fsck -y /dev/sda4
- Type:
exit
The system should initiate a restart.
