This article applies to organisations with a 'Hybrid' setup (both On-Premise Appliance and Cloud), as well as On-Premise only and Cloud only setups.
Google Image search, thumbnails or search suggestions can sometimes show inappropriate images, even when SafeSearch is enforced.
You can block a specific image, or restrict search results using one or both of these Content Modifications:
- Enforce Google Image Licensing: Users will only see images licensed under the Creative Commons license, which often reduces the likelihood of inappropriate images appearing.
- Google image search basic mode: Basic mode disables JavaScript for Google image search so Smoothwall can see the full source URL and block images based on the domain.
Step 1: Set up HTTPS Inspection
If you are using the On-Premise Appliance for Content Modification, you must have a HTTPS Inspection Policy to Decrypt and Inspect the Everything category. If this is not possible, Decrypt and Inspect the Search Engines category.
Step 2: Create a Content Modification policy
Create a Content Modification policy for Google image search basic mode or Enforce Google Image Licensing. After creating the policy, wait a few minutes and restart your browser to make sure the changes are applied.
When using Enforce Google Image Licensing, you’ll see the Creative Commons Licenses setting activated in Google Image results. You can see this highlighted in blue in the screenshot below.
