Sometimes inappropriate images still show in Google Image search, and as thumbnails for related images or search suggestions, even when SafeSearch is enforced.
Although it is possible to identify and block individual images, you can also restrict results in two ways using Content Modification:
- Enforce Google Image Licensing: Users will only see images licensed under the Creative Commons license, which helps to reduce inappropriate images from appearing.
- Google Image Search: Basic Mode: Smoothwall Web filter can see all the source links and filter effectively.
Step 1: Set up HTTPS Inspection
Create a HTTPS Inspection Policy to Decrypt and Inspect the Search Engines category.
Step 2: Create a Content Modification policy
Check if a Content Modification policy exists for Google Search, such as the SafeSearch Content Modification. If a policy exists, edit it to add further Content Modification.
If no policy exists, go to Guardian > Content Modification > Policy wizard to create a new content modification policy.
- In the Who section, select who the policy applies to. Select either:
- Everyone to apply to all users
- One or more User Groups
- The single user icon and enter a username (not available in Cloud Filter)
- In the What section, select Google Search.
- In the Where section, select where the policy should apply. Select either:
- Everywhere
- One or more network locations (IP or range of IPs)
- In the When section, select when the policy should apply from your list of Time slots.
- In the Action section, select Apply, and one of these items:
- Google Image Search: Basic Mode
- Apply Enforce Google Image Licensing
Make sure Enable policy is selected, then select Confirm.
Check your Content Modification has applied
- Wait a few minutes for the policy to be applied.
- Log into a device on your network.
- Open Google.
- You should see Creative Commons Licenses highlighted in blue for in Google Image results.
