When you edit or create certain reports, you can go to the Options tab to change the Unit between Hits, Bandwidth and Time spent browsing a given website.
Note
Reports exclude background activities associated with websites, such as updates to other browser tabs that are open, images that are updated and advert carousels.
When you select Time spent, report data is grouped into five-minute windows. Within each window, hits are further grouped according to domain. This is added to all other five-minute windows in the report time period to produce a total.
- No hits to any website during a window assumes no users were browsing.
- If a user has only one hit to a single website during that five-minute window, it is assumed the user spent the whole five minutes on that website.
- If multiple users browse to the same domain during the window, each window can account for more than five minutes of combined activity for that domain.
Example
In a given five-minute window, two users created 20 hits on example.com and 10 hits on test.com.
- User A created 15 hits on example.com and 5 hits on test.com.
- User B created 5 hits on example.com and 5 hits on test.com.
The activity is calculated as a ratio of hits for each user:
(site hits / total hits for the user) × time window
- User A (example.com): (15/20) × 5 minutes = 3 minutes 45 seconds
- User A (test.com): (5/20) × 5 minutes = 1 minute 15 seconds
- User B (example.com): (5/10) × 5 minutes = 2 minutes 30 seconds
- User B (test.com): (5/10) × 5 minutes = 2 minutes 30 seconds
Adding totals for each domain within that window:
- example.com: 3 minutes 45 seconds + 2 minutes 30 seconds = 6 minutes 15 seconds
- test.com: 1 minute 15 seconds + 2 minutes 30 seconds = 3 minutes 45 seconds
