We have received reports that some users of Smoothwall Cloud Filter are seeing unexpected Block pages when viewing Google search results on Google Chrome.
- Where one of the first two search results would be blocked if selected, the whole search page is blocked instead, even when the user does not select the link.
- If you’re using a Block page that shows the URL, the URL of the search result link is shown, rather than of the Google search page.
We believe Google introduced the issue in version 134 of the Chrome browser. Google is investigating when the issue was introduced and working with us to create a timeline for resolution.
In the meantime, you have two options if this is causing issues for your users.
Switch off pre-fetching for webpages
This issue is related to search result pre-fetching, where the Chrome browser starts downloading the first search results to speed up the user’s experience.
You can use Google Workspace, Intune or Active Directory Group Policy to set NetworkPredictionOptions to:
NetworkPredictionNever (2) = Don't predict network actions on any network connection
Roll back Chrome to an earlier release
If you can’t switch off pre-fetching, you can follow Google’s documentation on how to Roll back Chrome.
We will add further updates to this article as the issue develops.
