The IP tools check connectivity, both from the Smoothwall Filter and Firewall to devices on its local networks, and to hosts located externally on the Internet. There are two tools available, ping and IP Traceroute.
Ping establishes that basic connectivity to a specified host can be made. Use it to prove that the Smoothwall Filter and Firewall can communicate with hosts its local networks and external hosts on the Internet.
Traceroute reveals the routing path to Internet hosts, shown as a series of hops from one system to another. A greater number of hops indicates a longer (and slower) connection. The output of these commands is as it would be if the commands were run directly by the root user from the console.
- On the SYSTEM menu, under the Diagnostics submenu, click IP tools.
- To test that basic connectivity to a specified host can be made, under the Select tool section, from the Tool list, select "Ping". To reveal the routing path to internet hosts, select "Traceroute".
- Enter the IP address or hostnames that you want to ping or trace.
- From the Source IP list, choose the specific interface or IP address that you want to ping or start the trace from. Otherwise, leave as "Any".
- Click Run.
