You can choose to split your internal network into subnetworks (Subnets) for increased security and easier network management. You must have a Subnet Rule for any network not physically attached to the Smoothwall Appliance to allow routing to that network.
Add a Subnet rule
- Go to Network > Routing > Subnets and go to the Add a new rule section.
- Enter the Network IP address to specify the network ID part of the subnet.
- Enter a Netmask to specify the size of the subnet.
- Enter the Gateway IP address of the subnet on a network directly connected to the Smoothwall Appliance.
- Leave the router Metric as 0, or enter a new value to set the order in which ip route applies the Subnet rules when they are available.
Important
Smoothwall Appliance sends commands to ip route, which selects a Subnet rule. Lower Metric values take precedence over higher values. When two Subnet rules have the same Metric, ip route chooses a Subnet rule to apply. Ensure all Subnet rules have a unique Metric value to prevent network issues.
- (Optional) Enter a descriptive Comment.
- Ensure the Enabled checkbox is selected.
- Select Add.
Edit a Subnet rule
- Go to Network > Routing > Subnets.
- In the Current rules table, select the checkbox in the Mark column.
- Select Edit. The selected rule appears in the Add a new rule section.
- Edit the fields as needed.
- (Optional) Clear the Enabled checkbox to keep the rule in the list while having Smoothwall Appliance ignore it.
- Select Add.
Delete a Subnet rule
- Go to Network > Routing > Subnets.
- In the Current rules table, select the checkbox in the Mark column.
- Select Remove.
