Creating upstream proxies

Procedure

  1. On the WEB PROXY menu, under the Upstream proxy submenu, click Proxies.
  2. Under the Manage upstream proxy section, enter a meaningful Name for the upstream proxy. Only alphanumeric characters, including upper case characters, commas “,”, and dots “.”, are allowed in a proxy name. The name Default is invalid because it's reserved for the name of the default proxy.
  3. Enter the IP address or the Hostname of the upstream proxy, enter the Port number to use on the upstream proxy, and enter a descriptive Comment.
  4. To configure client credential forwarding, click Advanced » and choose a method for Client credential forwarding.
    • If you selected the Disabled option, enter the Username and Password used.
    • If you selected Username only, you only need to enter the password. This option forwards the username of the client making the request, with the Password entered when logging into the upstream proxy. This means that the upstream proxy can identify individual users without revealing their passwords. This method needs proxy authentication, NTLM authentication or NTLM identification to be turned on, otherwise usernames can't be determined by the Smoothwall Filter.
    • If you selected Username and password, you can leave both blank. This option forwards the username and password of the device making the request when logging into the upstream proxy. This could be used if both the Smoothwall Filter and the upstream proxy are authenticating against the same directory server but should be used with caution because it reveals device credentials. This method needs to use basic proxy authentication, not NTLM or any other authentication mechanism, otherwise, plain text usernames and passwords can't be determined by the Smoothwall Filter.
  5. Enter a Load balance ratio, for example, if one upstream proxy has the value: 2 and another upstream proxy has the value: 1 and both use the round robin load balancing method, then the proxy with value: 2 receives twice as many web requests as the proxy with value: 1.
  6. Click Save.
  7. To add other upstream proxies, repeat the previous steps.
