Communication between the IDex Client and the Smoothwall Filter and Firewall is via a nominated interface and TCP port combination. The IDex Client page is where you can specify this combination, noting the following:
- You should only use the IDex Client in trusted networks. Therefore, you can only select internal (Basic) interfaces.
- We recommend that you use Connect filter for Windows on remote connected devices instead.
- Connect Filter for Windows and IDex Client can't be installed together on the same device.
- If you use a load balancer, you can use the virtual IP address assigned to the service as an IDex Client interface. You can configure such addresses on the Settings page before they can be used in the Connect Filter or IDex Client pages.

Make sure that the proxy settings of your network devices are set to localhost:8080. This is used to redirect web traffic from the browser to the IDex Client first.
Typically, you can use an Active Directory Group Policy Object (GPO) to achieve this. However, there are alternative methods of distributing proxy settings to all devices.
